Name: Ben Joos

Résumé: Ben 2014

Quick and Dirty Version

Longwinded Version

Early Years/School: I was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. I have both my mother and my father and a brother that is five years older. As I grew up I was heavily involved in sports. From full contact all the way down to recreational, sports have been a big part of my life. Through sports I learned leadership from a young age. I learned how to deal with pressure, take a challenge and motivate others.

I went to Plum Senior High School and graduated in 2003. After that I attended the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg for one year but finished out my higher education at California University of Pennsylvania. At Cal U I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Graphic Design. College had a huge impact on me and really gave me the confidence that I needed to pursue my life goals as a designer. I graduated Cal U in 2007.

Career: My full time design career was really nurtured by the good folks at 400lb Communications. Here I was a jack of all trades. I created identities, print collateral, websites, shot and edited video as well as dabbled in motion graphics. 400lb Communications was ultimately merged with Chemistry Communications who resided in the strip district at the time.

Chemistry Communications was where I really dove deep into web design and just started to scratch the surface on mobile web. Also at this time I was creating identities, working with print and starting to interact and build client relationships. Finally, after a year with Chemistry we parted ways and I was started on a new journey in my design career.

This new path was cut straight down the middle of a firm called MAYA Design. At MAYA my focus was largely and intensely on UI/UX and Human-Centered Design. I worked in interdisciplinary teams (e.g., visual designers, industrial designers, engineers, human scientists and architects) and tackled many highly involved problems. From mobile apps and authoring tools to 52 mm matrix display screens and information architecture, I truly learned the power of design.

My most recent job was at General Dynamics C4 Systems | Viz as an Information Design Engineer. What did I do there? Well, I wore a few hats and gained a wide range of experiences. As an organization our focus was giving the United States Army the best command and control software in the world. My focus as a designer was on visual and interaction design where I worked on very large budget projects with very widely dispersed teams.

The Future: I am extremely passionate about design, life's mysteries and human interactions. Whatever the future may hold, I'll be ready.
